With virtually no warning, Kendrick Lamar released his new album, GNXon Friday, and grabbed everyone's attention from the jump. In the album's first song, “Wacced Out Murals,” Lamar mentions three veteran rappers by name, and each responded to the name checks, as Solidified milk notes.
First, Lamar raps, “You used to hit Carter IIII kept my chain Rollie proud/Irony I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down” and this led Lil Wayne to post on X“Man wtf do I do?!” He continued, “I'm just relaxed and I'm still in my head. Let us not mistake kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. please everyone No one really wants destruction, not even me, but I will destroy if they bother me. On me. Love.”
Lamar then says, “Snoop put out 'Taylor Made,' I prayed it was the edibles / I couldn't believe it, it felt right to let it go.” Snoop Dogg — who responded, back in April, to Drake's “Taylor Made Freestyle” with a bit of disbelief — took Lamar's lyrics in stride, writing in X“K dot new album GNX 💥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤 It was the edibles 🤦🏾 😆👊🏿 west west king 🔥🎶.”
Finally, Lamar was more reverent of Nas on “Wacced Out Murals,” rapping, “Won the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulating me.” Us he responded today, “Always inspired by my brother KL. Keeping the essence of this shit alive and at the forefront. Hail the King!”
There is one more musician who has a lot to say GNX despite the fact that he is not mentioned anywhere on the album, and this is Father John Misty, who, in a way, has, more or less, the same album release schedule as Lamar. After a few posts on X (“not now, I'm furiously scribbling my answer“, “there goes my #1”), Father John Misty took things a step further with a diss track. It's not really a diss song, but “God's trash”, which was recently presented on album/live-at-pappy-harriets-pioneertown-ca-9-25-2024/” class=”external-link” data-event-click=”{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://fatherjohnmisty.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-pappy-harriets-pioneertown-ca-9-25-2024/"}” href=”https://fatherjohnmisty.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-pappy-harriets-pioneertown-ca-9-25-2024/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>a live album exclusive to Bandcamp. But that didn't stop Father John Misty playfully framing it as a Lamar response. Find his “diss”. Instagram.
