Earlier this month, Drake grabbed former Toronto Raptor star and current Sacramento Kings star DeMar DeRozan — a Compton native who appeared in the “Not Like Us” video — and scoffed at the idea of the Raptors ever retiring the No. 10 of.
“If you ever put up a DeRozan banner, I'll go over there and take it down myself,” Drake he said on the show the same night the no. Vince Carter's 15 hit the post.
Season two of 19:00 in Brooklyn were back on Tuesday (November 12) as The Kid Mero and Carmelo Anthony welcomed a new co-host for the episode with recently retired NBA player Rudy Gay.
“I think Drake was hurt a little bit because of the relationship he built with DeMar in Toronto,” Melo said. “Representing the 6, Raptors — you know it was a lot of connection with those two. He's a Raptor for life from a basketball standpoint. Yes, this shirt should go up.”
Rudy Gay — who suited up for the Raptors in 2013 — said: Crazy, man. Drake is crazy about it… You gotta shoot DeMar if you feel like it before you get on camera.”
Melo agreed that Drizzy's comments may have been a little over the top. “Drake made a big deal when he said I'm going to go up there and take it down. That part is a lot,” Anthony said before adding that he understood why Drake was upset. “These are gunshots. You my friend, we on the swing, hanging, building the 6 up. From that point of view, that's going to piss me off too.”
Former New York Knicks and Gay believe Drake and DeRozan should have reached out before saying anything publicly on a show to see if they could hash it out.
“I'll feel it no matter what, but yes, you have a conversation. As a man, you have a conversation,” Melo continued.
Gay replied: “As a society we just get used to phones and cameras and all that. If you have a problem, come to me. To see your husband out there dancing with the enemy, it's kind of crazy.”
DeRozan – who spent the first nine years of his career in Toronto – was asked about Drake's comments about possibly retiring after the Kings-Raptors game. “He's got a long way to go,” quipped DeMar.
Drake and DeRozan had a close relationship, but things have since gone sour with DeMar appearing in Kendrick Lamar's “Not Like Us” video and joining the Compton native on stage at his Pop Out concert.
Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive defended DeRozan during the next Raptors-Kings game, and slammed Drake while rocking a “They Not Like Us” T-shirt while sitting courtside.
