A possible RUSH reunion could be on the horizon, as surviving members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have been playing some of the band's songs together.
Lifeson talked about his new practice regiment with Ultimate classic rockrevealing that he's been meeting up with Geddy in person to play RUSH songs, something they haven't done regularly since 2015, when the band played their last shows.
“We decided we'd play some RUSH songs,” Lifeson said. “Because, you know, we haven't played these songs in 10 years. We started that a couple of weeks ago. We meet one day a week at his house.”
So far, it's been a slow process, as the guitarist and bassist return to the complex songs they helped write together years or decades ago.
“We picked out some RUSH songs and started playing them and we sounded like a really bad Rush tribute band,” Lifeson said.
He continued: “Trying to figure out the songs, I'm like, 'Why did we write that so hard? Why is it so difficult to play? After about three runs through all of these songs, muscle memory kicks in and your hand just goes where it goes. You get out of the way, you play, and you say, 'Thank God, I made this simpler than it looked.'”
As Lifeson and Lee's fingers “get more nimble” and their “calluses are building up again,” we can only assume that the two will eventually start playing the songs with a drummer.
Last year, Lee hinted that a RUSH reunion might happen and that he was working on Lifeson to consider touring again. In 2021, Lifeson insisted that there was “no way RUSH would ever exist again” following the death of drummer Neil Peart in 2020.
