South London trio Goat Girl are releasing a new album, Under the Waste, out June 7 via Rough Trade. Now they've shared the album's second single, “Motorway,” via a music video. Check it out below.
The Goat Girl is Lottie Pendlebury (she/her), Rosy Jones (they/them) and Holly Mullineaux (she/her).
In a press release, Pendlebury says that 'Highway' was 'born out of a desire to write a song where the main focus was the voice. Listening to a lot of music where the vocal line took all the attention through unexpected turns and melodic developments, I knew I wanted to try something similar. I sat down with a simple subbass line and experimented with letting the voice move as it wanted and recorded a video of myself to capture the moment. “Driving on the highway” was initially the only lyrics I had and I would annoy everyone by singing them over and over. It became this really catchy riff that found its place as the opening line of the track and of course the main theme. He marveled at the feelings of being a kid in the back seat of a car, not knowing where you're going but feeling content, or the fleeting moments you spend in new cities and how the journey rather than the destination sometimes seems like the main ingredient.
“Writing instrumentals together, I naturally gravitated towards a more electronic sound that suited the pop-esque style of the track. As a band we have a shared love of pop lords and we'll refer to tracks like Kid Cudi's 'Pursuit of Happiness' or 'Day n Nite' to try and think of the song. We really lent to this track's epicness and pop sensibilities, through holly's melodic sub-bass synth that constantly weaves between the vocals, Rosy's drums that create weight in their space, and the Juno 60 that blasts away throughout the chorus. While we were leaning in, we also wanted to subvert the trope of the classic pop ballad and include instrumentals, such as the wind instrument playing the main chords heard in the chorus, placing the sonic in a unique place.”
Holly Blakey directed and choreographed the video and said: “Goat Girl are some of the coolest and most inspiring people I've met recently. We wanted to make something that had a constant flare, rooted in fantasy, slightly fractured and a playful rethinking of our highway journey. The band talked about these long drives they would take as kids or on tour and it reminded me of the times in my life when I got to places, but also when I left. I guess in those moments I always notice and when I do that, I find that curiosity in my life. I guess I wanted to tap into the privacy we assume about our anonymous lives, our obsessions, our avoidance, our need for companionship.'
Previously, Goat Girl shared the album's first single, “ride around,” via a music video. It was one of the songs of the week.
The trio co-produced the album with John 'Spud' Murphy (Lankum, black midi). Under the Waste is the band's third album and the follow-up to 2021 On four and 2018's self-titled debut.
Most of the new album was recorded at Ireland's Hellfire Studios, which according to a press release is “in the shadow of the infamous Hellfire Club—one of Ireland's most haunted buildings.” Additional instruments were recorded in various locations, including the band's studio in South London and a barn in Essex. They feature strings by Ruben Kyriakides and Nic Pendlebury, woodwinds by Alex McKenzie and vocals (“including a choir made up of family and friends,” the press release states).
