Lyrically, “American Idiot” speaks to the turbulent sociopolitical climate of 21st-century America, referencing national tension, propaganda, a media-controlled country, and more. As such, it’s no surprise that the song has remained a beloved anthem. Now, it joins “Basket Case” as Green Day’s second song to surpass the billion-song mark, and the band’s photo serves as the cover art for Spotify’s BILLIONS CLUB playlist this week.
Next, Green Day will continue celebrating American Idiot with a massive anniversary box set, arriving on October 25th with a track listing that includes several previously unreleased songs (Book here). Plus, they're honoring the album in less conventional ways, like featuring a American Idiot Keurig-themed coffee maker, complete with K-cups from their Punk Bunny Coffee line (being brewed at 7-Elevens for a limited time).
Green Day will continue the “Saviors Tour” with shows in Texas and the West Coast, concluding with a final performance in San Diego on September 28. Buy your tickets here.
