Grupo Marca Registrada, Evo Luxury 2 (RB Music)
If the album title isn't enough of an indication that Grupo Marca Registrada is in their prime, then the tracks on the album will. Led by singer-songwriter Fidel Castro, Marca Registrada released what can be considered their most eclectic album to date. Evo, short for development (or evolution) includes “Bugatti Chiron”, a piercing norteña, starring the accordion, which has characterized the Mexican band's sound for years. But Castro doesn't box himself or the band in norteño alone. “BW” is a departure from Bugatti with requinto leading the way, for a more tumbado approach. “En El Audi” stands out with Castro's light and airy vocals sung over an EDM-tinged pop track, showcasing his experimental side.
Everywhere EvoMarca Registrada traverses corridors of opulent lifestyles, ominous characters like Bruce Wayne and disappointment. The eclectic album reflects a broader trend as young Mexican and Mexican-American hitmakers prove that Mexican music is global, not just local. However, even as Marca Registrada expands into new, more flexible, territories, their essence remains Música Mexicana. — GRISELDA FLORES
Alemán & Gera MX, Rich Mafia, Vol. 1. (Sony Music Entertainment México)
With a brazen clash of electric beats and powerful lyricism, Mexican rappers Alemán and Gera MX join forces for a collaborative album on Rich Mafia, Vol. 1. Fueled by cutting-edge rap artistry, the 12-track album feels like a grand celebration, a stardust-sprinkled reunion, proving that their eight-year absence from sharing the stage (since the days of “Sin Perder el Tiempo”) just caught on their edge rather than blunting it.
The Baja Californa Sur and Nuevo León rappers drop lines full of bravado and sharp imagery, invoking personas to exemplify their unapologetic nighttime style.
The centerpiece, “Como Pacman,” embodies the themes of the entire album — bold, relentless, and filled with clever pop culture references that hit as hard as the beats that accompany them.
“Bendición” featuring C. Tangana and “Cabo Girl” featuring Leonel García imbue the album with a cross-genre appeal that expands their scope beyond hard-core rap. Then their electro-corridos fusion with Junior H on “Close Friends”, featuring Cozy Cuz, only adds to a more diverse listening experience. “LA Baby” exudes a nostalgic, electro-funk style that takes you back. Alemán and Gera MX don't just claim the throne of Mexican rap, they invite the entire genre to ascend with them. — ISABELA RAYGOZA
Kany García & Rawayana, “La Culpa” (5020 Records)
The flavor of Puerto Rico and Venezuela are combined in this fusion of crowd and other Caribbean rhythms that denounces common social problems – such as the fragility of electrical systems and other public services – with the characteristic joy and passion of the region. “I only came out 'cause it's hard that the power went out/ And I asked for some rum for anesthesia,” García sings while Raguaiana's Beto gracefully adds that “in the Caribbean we make love without light and without water.” “La Culpa” is, undeniably, a tastefully illustrated social critique. — SIGAL RATNER-ARIAS
Ha*Ash & Elena Rose, “A Las 12 Te Olvidé” (Sony Music México)
Sibling duo Ha*Ash and singer-songwriter Elena Rose join forces on this beautiful country ballad about a past love that returns when it's too late. With heartfelt lyrics — like “Before I wanted you to fight for me, not fight with me/ You were the one who left such an unbearable silence/ And now I'm the one to blame” — “A Las 12 Te Olvidé” gives the three singers the room to shine separately, while also offering delightful vocal harmonies. It's part of Ha*Ash's new album, Hashvillewhich was released on Thursday (October 31) with the premiere of this new single. — SRA
