Hamish Linklater joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Huntan Apple TV+ conspiracy thriller about one of the best-known but least understood crimes in history: the astonishing search for John Wilkes Booth following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Alongside Tobias Menzies (who plays Edwin Stanton, the US Secretary of War at the time) and Lily Taylor (as Mary Todd Lincoln), Linklater plays the series' 16th president, showing a side of the historical figure who he is not usually depicted in depictions of his life. “We have his words, we have a very good idea of what he was like as a statesman,” Linklater says. “But what it was like on the home front: perhaps there was more creative freedom, but it was essential that the show show what motivated his friend Edwin Stanton to pursue his killer with such ferocity and then defend the legacy with such unquestionable integrity. . .”
It also discusses the struggle he faced in finding the right voice and capturing Lincoln's surprising “feet on the desk” attitude, as he wanted to keep things fresh in a story so often told.
Linklater also nods about his next directorial effort Center Owl, on which he worked with his partner Lily Rabe. “It's the kind of thing where you say, 'I co-directed something with my partner,' and they say, 'I've got a great lawyer for you, it'll be a soft landing,'” she jokes. “But it was a totally wonderful experience.”
