Heavy Song of the Week is a feature from Heavy Consequence that looks at the best metal and hard rock songs you should listen to every Friday. This week, the top spot goes to British rock titans Deep Purple for their new single “Lazy Sod.”
The inspiration for Deep Purple’s latest single, “Lazy Sod,” came indirectly from an unexpected source: country music heroine Dolly Parton.
When singer Ian Gillan was reminded during a recent interview that Dolly had written over 5,000 songs in her estimated career (compared to his own 500), he was humbled and jotted down the words “lazy” in his notebook. It eventually became the title of this new Deep Purple track and served as the conceptual basis for the lyrical content.

“The world is on fire and I can’t get out of bed.” Gillan sings during the opening bars of the song.
In an age where lyrics are often laden with irony, it's refreshing to hear such direct honesty. Gillan goes on to lament the tumultuous state of the world and her powerlessness to change it, a very relatable sentiment of resignation that sounds poignant.
Musically, “Lazy Sod” is a quick and tight distillation of the classic Deep Purple sound. Energetic blues riffs are paired with prominent organ, and the British legends eschew any verse-chorus-verse rigidity with some extended scale climbs and a ripping bridge section that goes full-on progressive.
