Tetris Kelly:
We are living through the “Renaissance” and for Black Music Month we take a look at the history of house music.
DJ Minx:
Because the black people who created house music, which a lot of people don't know, are from Chicago. We don't see them when we walk, we see a group of white men. We are the black creators, it is necessary to teach history.
Tetris Kelly:
When researching house music, one can easily discover that the genre was created in Chicago by black and primarily gay DJs in the late 1970s and 1980s. One DJ, Frankie Knuckles, helped pioneer the sound by mixing disco funk and German electropop. In 1984, songs like “On & On” became what some consider the first real house records. The genre has grown from basements to festivals around the world and has always maintained its core value of finding joy and creating community, something Beyoncé captured with the release of 'Renaissance.'
And as a black woman reclaiming the genre, she made history by winning the Grammy for Best Electronic Dance Music Album.
