To most teenagers dramas, when a moody 17-year-old is forced to move due to divorce or new adoptive parents, his only real tasks are knocking on bedroom doors and worrying about building his new social life from scratch. But in the first trailer for Tilman Singer's Cuckoo, Hunter Schafer's Gretchen's relocation is marked by a more sinister mission: to overcome the terrifying creatures that haunt and hunt her.
“They think I'm crazy,” Gretchen says in the trailer, having put in a lawn and being fired when she told the police she was being chased by a woman. Bloodied and bruised in a hospital bed, a man warns her: “If I were you, I wouldn't want to get hurt any more.”
The twisted part is that, all things considered, and teenage melodrama aside, this should have been a perfect escape. She lives in a resort in the German Alps—albeit with her father and his new family—with stellar views and floor-to-ceiling windows. But its beauty is only surface level.
“Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. König, her father's boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen's mute half-sister Alma,” reads the film's synopsis. “Something doesn't seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also involves her family.”

“I always get into his spiral, am I meant to do this?” Shafer said recently British GQ. “I think I could probably keep acting for a while just based on how they've gone, which is really cool. But there are so many other things I want to do in my life that I've kind of put on hold and I don't want to let go.”
Stevens added: “The mistake people often make is: Well, you have to pick one. And actually, it doesn't. I think he can succeed in whatever direction he decides to go. He doesn't feel too ambitious to say that, because he has the talent to back it up.”
