Jason Derulo relived one of the scariest moments of his life during a conversation with ex-girlfriend Paris Hilton with her. I am Paris podcast this week. The 34-year-old “Spicy Margarita” singer told Hilton he thought the 2013 tour rehearsal accident in which he broke his neck might have been the end of it all.
“This is crazy,” Derulo said, explaining that he was working with a trainer at the time to prepare for his upcoming world tour when their preparation went seriously wrong. “He was like, 'today we're going to work on endurance, so I'm going to need you to do these tucks back to back, back to back,'” the singer said his coach told him.
“He had me do like 50 back-to-back tucks, which is another one of the worst ideas anyone's ever had,” Derulo said of the maneuver, which is a flip in which the performer starts from a standing position. they position and throw their body back, land on their hands and then spring up to land on their feet again in the same direction. “So I slipped during one of the back tucks and landed on my head, breaking my C2 vertebrae.”
Once the accident happened, Derulo described hearing, “a big crack, and I said, 'Holy, is that it?' Is that how it all ends?' And all the thoughts you could imagine go through my mind at that moment.” He also recalled thinking at the time that his mother was outside the gym waiting for him in the car and that he didn't want to startle her with the news. After lying on the ground for five minutes, he said he pulled himself together and walked to the car holding his neck.
“And then I'm like, 'Mom, I think I hurt myself a little bit' — like in that bright kind of voice,” he told her. “I think I hurt myself a little inside, we should probably go to the hospital to get it checked out.” The ride to the hospital was rough, with Derulo describing every bump in the road as feeling like “hell on Earth . I'm just dying in that passenger seat, but I don't want to tell her that.''
At the hospital, Derulo was x-rayed and the doctor arrived with good news and bad news. The good news, the doctor said, was that Derulo had suffered what's called a “hanger's break,” which is the same break that occurs when someone hangs from a rope. “And you're still alive. This could have ended up much more insane, paralyzed or worse,” the doctor told him. “That's the good news, you're still here with us and you can move all your limbs. The bad news is you're going to be out for seven months.”
Derulo described going from being in complete control of his life to having “no kind of control,” to not being able to tie his shoes or take a shower on his own. “It was the first time in my life I felt like I wasn't in control,” she said. The injury required seven months of intensive rehabilitation, including a 45-minute walk every morning, followed by “hours and hours” in the studio writing and recording in 2013 I talk dirty (also known as Tattoo) album.
The other major blow for Derulo was the cancellation of his tour, which he knew would be a disappointment to his fans. “I know how much this means to people, people are saving their money, their hard earned money and they want to be a part of this experience. All of a sudden this whole st came down the drain,” he said.
Derulo released his fifth studio album, Nu Kingon February.
