Jelly Roll and Charli XCX are not two names one would expect to come up together in conversation. But in a recent interview on ESPN The Pat McAfee ShowThe country artist spoke about his belief that some “old school dirty business” was going on last month as the two competed for No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Jelly Roll released their new album, beautifully brokenthe same week that Charli XCX released the remix version of her explosive project 2024, Brat and it's completely different but it's also still Brat. “I won't say the name of the artist because I know a lot of artists are out of touch with what's going on in the business,” Jelly Roll said.

He went on to explain that his team was keeping an eye on the numbers as he, Charli XCX and rapper Rod Wave were locked in a battle for the top spot. “There was an artist where Hit double daily “We projected that they wouldn’t even be 50 or 60,000 albums away from Rod Wave and I,” he recalled. “And then on Thursday night, before the Friday count ends, 40,000 albums… [a] The third party aggregate site had that. And you're looking and you're like, 'Hey, that's just slimy.'”
“Now Luminate, who is in charge of counting record sales, rejected these sales, and that's how I ended up with the number one album, so that's the truth,” he added.
Charli eventually landed at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 behind Jelly Roll at No. 1 and Rod Wave at No. 2. That said, both Jelly Roll and Charli XCX are doing well, with the album number 1 or not.
Jelly Roll is currently in the middle of the ongoing “Beautifully Broken” tour (get tickets here). Elsewhere, Charli earned seven Grammy nominations last week, including a nod for the coveted Album of the Year spot.
