Jerrod Carmichael shoots his shot. In its premiere episode Jerrod Carmichael reality show, the comedian confessed that he fell in love with one of his longtime friends, Tyler the Creator.
On the self-titled show, Carmichael recalled expressing his new romantic feelings to the rapper via text in 2021 — but the feelings weren't mutual. In a six-second vocal response, Tyler laughed off his friend, calling the comedian a “stupid bitch.”
“One, it's embarrassing, a little bit, and obviously [there’s] the fear of it being so completely unfulfilled,” Carmichael said of the rapper's response.
Despite being ridiculed, Carmichael decided to try again in 2022, asking Tyler to be his date to the Emmy Awards. (That year, Carmichael won Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for HBO Rothanail.) As the episode counted down the days to the awards ceremony, Carmichael tried to distract from the rapper's lack of response to his invitation by going through a revolving door of Grindr links — some of which even appeared on broadcast.
“Part of me wants to play musical chairs on Grindr day,” Carmichael said before the Emmys.
A few days before the awards ceremony, Tyler finally declined, leaving Carmichael to take a friend — identified as “anonymous” and shown wearing a ski mask and goggles — instead. Towards the end of the episode, Carmichael and Tyler sat down to discuss their friendship. The rapper explained that news of the comedian's feelings was “a lot to take in” and said he saw Carmichael more like family.
“Getting news like this and then avoiding it is a way to avoid change,” Tyler said. “He's like a brother. This man is like family. ”
In another intimate moment from the premiere episode, Carmichael shared a congratulatory voicemail from his mom after winning his Emmy, despite being ostracized by his family over his sexuality. (Carmichael came out publicly as gay Rothanail.)
“It's so funny that me and my family don't really talk, it's gay shit, and then I win an award on TV,” Carmichael said, “and I'm like, 'We still have to reach out.'
Carmichael's love life is a recurring theme in the Jerrod Carmichael reality show, which follows the comedian from the standup scene to his childhood home in North Carolina, chronicling deeply personal details including love, sex, infidelity, family conflicts and more over eight episodes. In the episode, Carmichael said he's especially comfortable in front of the camera, so projecting his childhood trauma and detailing his sex addiction on screen doesn't bother him.
But Carmichael's friend 'anonymous' is among the biggest critics of the comedian's 'exhibition' Jerrod Carmichael reality showsaying his attempt to self-Shaw Truman himself through the “it's not true” series.
“There's public and private,” said the anonymous in the documentaries, “And then there's masturbating public.”
However, Carmichael said living his life in front of the world is an effort to keep him honest.
“I keep saying I want to live more truly and I find myself very alone and I can't tell if it's because I'm afraid to tell the truth,” he said.
