Joe Alwyn is speaking out for the first time about his split from Taylor Swift.
In one interview with The Sunday Times Style Magazinereleased on Saturday (June 15), the 33-year-old actor, who stars in George Lanthimos' upcoming film Kindness itemsbroke his silence on his split with the pop superstar in April 2023.
Alwyn, who dated Swift for six years, described their relationship as “long, loving” and “totally committed”. The “Anti-Hero” singer, 34, has yet to publicly comment on the split, but many believe her latest album, Department of Tormented Poetsinspired by the split.
Earlier this year, fans speculated that his title Tormented Poets — which has spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — is like a group chat between Alwyn and fellow actors Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal called “The Tortured Man Club.”
When asked if he has listened to his ex-girlfriend's new album, Alwyn said Times, “Thinking about what I was about to say, I would think and hope that anyone and everyone can empathize. … This is not a direct answer to your question, but just thinking about what I want to talk about.”
He continued, “I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years. This is a difficult thing to navigate.”
Alwyn and Swift split in April 2023 around the time the pop star launched her record-breaking The Eras tour in North America. The Conversations with friends The actor reflected on the aftermath of the breakup, saying, “What's unusual and abnormal about this situation is that, a week later, it's suddenly in the public domain and the outside world can weigh in.”
“So you've got something very real suddenly thrown into a very unreal space: tabloids, social media, press, where it's then analyzed, speculated on, bent out of shape beyond recognition,” he told Times. “And the truth is that to the last point, there will always be a gap between what is known and what is said. I've come to terms with it.”
Alwyn noted that he and Swift have “mutually” agreed to “keep the most private details of our relationship private.” He added, “It's never been something to commercialize and I see no reason to change that now.”
Swift and the Favorite The actor first started dating in 2016, and mostly kept a low profile. During their six years together, they rarely made public outings. However, they spoke fondly of each other in occasional interviews, and the 12-time Grammy winner opened up about her love for Alwyn in her Netflix documentary. Miss America.
Alwyn said to Times that he is doing well after the breakup. “Look, that's also just over a year ago now, and I feel lucky to be in a really great place in my life – professionally and personally. I feel very good,” he said.
