Juana Bacalao, a famous Cuban singer and cabaret diva who performed until recently, has died. It was 98.
Bacalao died on Saturday (February 24) after spending several days in a Havana hospital, according to a statement from Cuba's culture ministry. Officials did not say why he was hospitalized.
Bacalao was known for her husky voice, risque personality and unpredictable, wig-clad and extravagant costumes. He played at the famous Tropicana club in the 1940s and 50s and sang alongside artists such as Nat King Cole.
“I will never retire. I will only stop when death comes for me,” she said in a 2010 interview The Associated Press.
Born Neri Amelia Martínez Salazar, she was sent to a Catholic boarding school after being orphaned at age 6.
She was discovered as a teenager while singing while cleaning houses and given the nickname “Juana Bacallao”, which became a sensation in the Cuban cabaret scene.
Bacallao played with stars such as singer and pianist Bola de Nieve, percussionist Chano Pozo and singer Benny Moré.
“I know what life is — both poverty and wealth,” Bacalao told the AP more than a decade ago. “This is my land. I was born there and I will die there.”
