Park Boram, a television singing competition star who showcased her powerful vocals for a decade in the K-pop industry, died on Tuesday (April 11), her record company in Korea confirmed. Police are currently investigating the cause of death. It was 30.
Park's agency Xanadu Entertainment shared the news of the singer-songwriter-actor's sudden death on Friday (April 12) in Korea and said the cause of death is being investigated by the police. The star has reportedly been working on new music after releasing two new songs earlier this year.
Park Boram first made an impact in the K-pop industry at the age of 17, participating in the singing competition series in 2010 Super Star K2 as a high school student with a love for R&B music and became one of the youngest finalists before finishing in eighth place. She made her official stage debut on August 7, 2014, with the single “Beautiful”, featuring popular rapper Zico, which reached No. 2 on Korea's local Gaon singles chart and earned her the Artist of the Year award for August's top charting song at the 2014 Gaon Chart Music Awards. The track and music video were particularly semi-autobiographical in detailing Park's lengths to be “Beautiful”, including exercise and extreme dieting to lose 70 kilos before her debut. Her first EP was released, Famousin April 2015, which included “Beautiful” with its self-titled single, and also secured another top 10 hit.
During her decade of singing, Park Boram was also known for her impressive contributions to Korean soundtracks such as 'Hyehwadong (or Sangmundong)' for the K-drama Answer 1988which has boasted more than 16.5 million streams on Spotify since its launch in 2015, or “Say something, please, even if I know it's a lie” for W soundtrack, which has nearly 12 million Spotify streams as of 2016. Park has collaborated with a number of different artists in Korea, including singer-songwriter Eric Nam, a member of the boy band Park Kyungwild card Park Jae Jung and rapper Lil Boiand just last February, he was reunited with his winner SuperStar K2lead singer Huh Gak, for their duet “Hope.”
After “I Hope”, Park Boram released the single “I Miss You” on April 3rd as part of a project covering songs from the 90s. It was previously shared that the star was working on an album celebrating her upcoming 10th anniversary this summer.
