As promised, Kate Middleton made her first public appearance in months as the Princess of Wales joined the royal family on Saturday at the Trooping the Color ceremony in London to celebrate King Charles III's “official” birthday.
Despite the “beating rain”, as the BBC put itand an unroofed balcony outside Buckingham Palace, the Royal Family – including the Middletons and King Charles, who like the princess is also battling cancer but has since returned to public duties, as well as Prince William and their three children of the couple – everyone gathered outside to join in the festivities.
Ahead of the event on Saturday, Middleton posted a video of the family preparing for the procedures on social media:
The Trooping the Color ceremony was Middleton's first official public appearance since December, weeks before she was admitted to a London clinic on January 16 for a “scheduled” non-cancerous abdominal operation, according to a announcement from Kensington Palace. Middleton remains in the hospital for 10 to 14 days, followed by recovery at home.
However, Middleton's week-long absence sparked much tabloid speculation, which was further fueled in part when the Princess of Wales shared a poorly Photoshopped family photo with the press. The rumors didn't stop until March, when Middleton revealed in a video statement that she had cancer.
“At the time, my condition was considered non-cancerous,” he said at the time. “The surgery was successful, however, post-surgery tests for cancer were present.”
On Friday, Middleton offered an update on her health battle, as well as announcing that she will perform at the Trooping the Color ceremony.
“I'm making good progress, but as anyone who goes through chemotherapy knows, there are good days and bad days,” Middleton shared in a statement. “On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to let your body rest. But on good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling good. My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months. On the days when I'm feeling pretty good, it's a joy to catch up on school life, spend personal time on things that give me energy and positivity, and start doing some work from home.”
She continued, “I'm looking forward to attending the King's Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hopefully getting in some public engagements over the summer, but also knowing I'm not out of the woods yet. I'm learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body and allowing myself to take that much needed time to heal. Thank you so much for your continued understanding and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me.”
