In a new interview, Katy Perry briefly touched on her collaborations with songwriter and producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke' Gottwald on recent singles 'Woman's World' and 'Lifetimes'. The conversation took place with host Alex Cooper in a new episode of She called her dad podcast. It starts around 55:56 of the episode.
Perry faced backlash for teaming up with Dr. Luke, who had been embroiled in a lengthy legal battle with Kesha after she sued him, in 2014, for sexual assault and more. The producer has long denied Kesha's abuse allegations as well filed a libel suit lawsuit against Kesha. Kesha's lawsuit against Dr. Luke was dismissed in 2016, and while the defamation case lingered for years, the two sides agreed to settle it in 2023.
On She called her dadCooper told Perry, “I know a lot of people have expressed their disappointment and were really upset that you decided to involve Dr. Luke on this album.” He then asked, “Why did you choose to work with him?”
Perry responded, “Look, I understand that a lot of conversations started and he was one of them many partners I've worked with, but the reality is that it comes from me.” He continued, “The truth is, I wrote these songs from my experience throughout my life going through this transformation. And, he was one of the people who helped facilitate all of that — one of the writers, one of the producers. And, I speak from my own experience.”
Perry continued: “Like, when I talk about 'Woman's World,' I'm talking about feeling so powerful now, as a mother, as a woman, giving birth, creating life, creating another set of organs, a brain, a heart. I made a heart out of the whole ass! And I did, and I still do. And I'm still a matriarch and I feel really grounded in that. I'm talking from there. And so I created all of this with a lot of different collaborators, people that I've worked with in the past, from Teenage Dream era, all that”.
“Woman's World” and “Lifetimes” appear on Perry's upcoming album 143which releases on September 20 via Capitol. It marks Perry's first studio album since 2020 Smile.
Katy Perry collaborated with Dr. Luke on some of her biggest hits, including her singles “I Kissed a Girl,” “Hot n Cold,” “Teenage Dream,” “Last Friday Night (TGIF),” “California Gurls,” and “Bryngii.” She and Dr. Luke last collaborated on her 2013 album Prismand did not work with him in 2017 Witness or Smileboth arrived following Kesha's sexual assault allegations against the producer.
