Killer Mike finally opened up about his weird night at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 4). The 48-year-old rapper, born Michael Santiago Render, was held at LA's Crypto.com Arena shortly before the prime-time show began after winning three top hip-hop awards during the pre-telecast Grammy Awards ceremony.
Appearing on V103's Big Tigger Morning Show on Monday morning (February 5), Mike, who said he had been out partying all night, appeared to downplay the incident when host Tigger asked 'what happened' on Sunday night. “I won a Grammy,” Mike said. “We partied all night. Shout out to my record label. Nothing had happened, man. But we are winners. This is.”
Tigger tried to approach the question from a different angle, asking why Mike left the Grammys and came back. “Didn't I look good? I was fresh. All black,” Mike replied, focusing on his outfit, the car he got in, and the $400,000 Cuban necklace he was rocking instead of going into the details of the arrest. “Then I went and collected all the gold… We threw speed and then hit back at the party,” Mike said in the only apparent reference to his arrest.
After picking up Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Scientists & Engineers” and Best Rap album for his solo effort Michael, Mike was booked on a misdemeanor. In a late-night tweet, the LAPD's intelligence bureau issued a statement about the arrest, writing, “On Sunday, February 4th, shortly after 4 p.m., an adult male was arrested and placed in handcuffs for a physical altercation that occurred in the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court. The suspect was arrested and transported to LAPD Headquarters.”
In an email to Advertising sign on Monday morning (Feb. 5), a Los Angeles spokesman confirmed that the suspect named in Sunday's tweet was Render, who was charged with a misdemeanor and released without bond. As of press time, representatives for the rapper and the Recording Academy had not returned calls Advertising signHis request for further comment and no additional information about the incident that led to the arrest was available.
When co-host Jazzy asked if the “execution or the catch” overshadowed the three wins, Mike was again adamant that it didn't spoil his big night. “I was not led anywhere. I wasn't carrying… nor will we let you ask that question,” Mike said, noting that an Atlanta artist won best rap album for an LP released the year hip-hop celebrated its 50th anniversary.
