Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars bring their Dolly Parton- and Porter Wagoner-era cowboy hats to their new music video for “Die With a Smile,” the pop duo's new collaboration that dropped at midnight ET Friday (August 16).
The visual finds the “Just Dance” singer and Silk Sonic frontman jamming to a set made to look like a retro music TV show, wearing matching red and blue outfits that wouldn't be out of place at the Grand Ole. The Opry Stadium in the 1960s. With Aris on guitar and Gaga seated at a piano—cigarette dangling from her lips, blonde braids forgotten in true Parton style—the pair passionately share their existential news song.
“If the world was ending, I'd like to be by your side/ If the party was ending and our time on Earth was ending,” Ares and Gaga sing on the track that yearns for more 1970s soul than C&W. “I'd like to hold you for a while and die with a smile.”
Shortly after the project was scrapped, the Joker star and “Uptown Funk!” The hitmaker debuted “Die With a Smile” live at Ari's concert on Thursday night (August 15) at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. For the show, he wore a cowboy hat, while Gaga again sported beehive hair similar to her appearance in the music video.
“Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for the icon, pop royalty, Lady Gaga!” Aris said as he introduced his duet partner to loud cheers from the stunned crowd.
The pair barely gave fans a heads-up before announcing their new song was on the way, simply posting the cover art and confirming its release date on Instagram less than 12 hours earlier. “WHILE YOU WAIT UNTIL LG7… 'DIE WITH A SMILE' a duet with @brunomars ❤️🔥” Gaga wrote at the time, teasing her upcoming seventh album.
