Lana del Rey and Quavo are a country-loving, shotgun-toting couple on their country-rap collaboration, “Tough.” The track dropped on Wednesday afternoon.
“Hard as the scratch on a pair of old leather boots/Like the blue collar, with red dirt,” Del Rey sings on the song's chorus. “Like a brass .38/Hard as the stuff in your grandpa's glass.”
The Wyatt Spain Winfrey-directed video sees the musician couple sharing a life of leisure in a country mansion, taking turns shooting guns and riding in a Chevy truck. The lyrics hear the pair sing from the perspective of a couple reflecting on life's trials after reaching a better place.
At one point, Quavo references takeoff, crossing his arms like a T while rapping, “Stand in the storm, still shining like a diamond in the rough/And that's hard if you ever lose someone you love.”
Del Rey and Quavo shared a clip of the Cirkut and Andrew Watt-produced track on Instagram last month. They later debuted while Del Rey was playing at Boston's Fenway Park. The new song also comes about five months after Del Rey and Quavo were spotted a party together during Grammy week in February.
“Tough 4th of July,” the duo he wrote on Instagram announcing the track's release date over the weekend. The announcement sees Del Rey putting a necklace around Quavo's neck.
Earlier this year, Del Rey announced that she would be releasing Lasso In September. “If you can't already tell from our award winners and our performers, the music industry is going country,” he told the crowd. “We're going to the country. It happens. That's why Jack [Antonoff] followed me to Muscle Shoals, Nashville, Mississippi, for the past four years.”
This is far from the first time Del Rey has collaborated with a rapper on her music. A$AP Rocky played an alternate version of John F. Kennedy in the iconic video for Born to die2012's “National Anthem.” He later joined her on “Groupie Love” and “Summer Bummer,” which also featured Playboi Carti from 2017 Lust for love. Rocky and Del Rey also recorded an unreleased fan favorite called “Ridin.”
In 2014, French Montana sampled Del Rey's “Video Games” for “All For You,” which featured lyrics from Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa.
The new track follows Del Rey's headlining sets at Coachella, which included performances from Camila Cabello and Billie Eilish on separate weekends. Her latest album arrived last year with Did you know there's a tunnel under Ocean Avenue?.
“Through stories of her family, a failed relationship, her conflicted desire to be seen and to be hidden, Del Rey reveals more than who she is, but also why she is who she is,” he said. Rolling rock LP review.
