Surviving De La Soul members Posdnuos and Maseo collaborated with debutant Prince Paul, 3 feet tall and risingon Thursday to celebrate the record's 35th anniversary The Late Show. To mark the occasion, the trio demonstrated how to “cook a 35-year-old dish” — the album's Steely Dan-infused single, “Eye Know” — as if it were a stew.
Wearing neon aprons reminiscent of the album cover, Posh told the crowd: “We've got a few simple ingredients and what we need to do is start with whistles.” He threw a few referee whistles into Maseo and Prince Paul's containers to play Otis Redding's iconic line from “(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay” and off they went.
“You need to stir it faster,” Posh teased. Then came the beats, “Pegs” (as Steely Dan they sample is “Peg”), sax, guitar, horns and “of course, a little Donald Fagan”.
Pos was feeling so good, he put an athlete on stage with his friends and the audience in the background. “Smile for the camera,” Fagan sings in the background. He then came to the front and delivered his verse, playing with his intro (as “Plug One”) and then recited the second verse, which belonged to the trio's late rapper Trugoy the Dove, who died last year. It was clearly a good time, honoring their friend, and the three men smiled and hugged each other at the end of the show.
Around this time last year, Pos and Mase appeared The Tonight Show, where they performed “Stakes Is High,” their 1996 single with the Roots. During an interview segment, they paid tribute to Trugoy, with Maseo saying, “I want to thank Dave.” The men then encouraged a “Thanks, Dave” chant in the audience.
