Rapper Lil Durk was arrested late Thursday (October 24th) in Florida on a federal murder-for-hire charge, hours after several of his alleged associates were indicted on similar charges for their alleged involvement in the shooting of rapper Quando Rando.
Chicago rapper Durk Devontay Banks is being held at the Broward County Jail on behalf of the US Marshals Office, according to Broward Sheriff's Office inmate records. The charges are not yet public in court records and additional details about the case against him are not yet available.
The star's lawyer, Brian Bieber, confirmed Bulletin board that Durk was in custody and would have an initial court appearance in Florida federal court on Friday.
Durk's arrest came hours after Los Angeles federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment against several alleged members of Durk's hip-hop group Only the Family (OTF). The five men — Kavon London Grant, Deandre Dodrell Wilson, Keith Jones, David Brian Lindsey and Asa Huston — are charged with murder-for-hire and murder-for-hire conspiracy.
In the indictment, prosecutors say the five men were behind a 2022 Los Angeles shooting targeting Quando Rondo (Tyquian Bowman) that left his cousin dead. They say the shooting was ordered by an unnamed conspirator in retaliation for a 2020 shooting in Atlanta in which an associate of Rondo's allegedly shot and killed Chicago rapper King Von (Dayvon Bennett).
“After that [2020] murder, Co-Conspirator 1 made it clear, in coded language, that Co-Conspirator 1 would pay a reward or monetary reward and/or pay anyone involved in the TB murder for their role in the DB murder,” they write the prosecutors. using Rondo and Von's initials.
Durk is not charged or cited in the earlier case.
King Von, an up-and-coming rapper in the Chicago scene and Durk's childhood friend, was shot and killed outside an Atlanta nightclub on November 6, 2020, after a dispute between two groups escalated into a fight in the parking lot. A 22-year-old man named Timothy Leeks, reportedly an associate of Rondo's, was arrested a few days later, but the case was eventually dropped.
Two years later, on August 19, 2022, Rondo and his partner Lul Pab (Saviay'a Robinson) were ambushed by gunmen while sitting in their car at a Los Angeles gas station. Rondo made it out unharmed, but Robinson later died at the hospital.
According to Thursday's indictment, that killing was allegedly committed by OTF members Grant, Wilson and Houston, as well as Jones and Lindsey, who prosecutors said were “members of other gangs in Chicago.” They claim the group “used two vehicles to locate, pursue and attempt to kill TB with gunfire — including with a fully automatic firearm — resulting in SR's death.”
Prosecutors say the group carried out the attack at the behest of the unnamed “Conspirator 1” in retaliation for the earlier killing of King Von. At one point, this unnamed conspirator allegedly texted another conspirator: “Don't book flights under any name.”
“Co-Conspirator 1 would pay off people Co-Conspirator 1 and other OTF members wanted to kill, including tuberculosis,” prosecutors wrote in Thursday's indictment. “As part of the bounty, the co-conspirators … would pay anyone involved in the TB killing and/or reward individuals with lucrative musical opportunities with OTF.”
