Chy Cartier: “Victory Lap Freestyle”
British underground hip-hop radio show and platform Victory Lap just released the best cypher since the one with Central Cee and Dave. Over the course of an hour, you'll get a solid look at some of the rappers blowing up in the UK right now: There's Ashbeck and cmillano's dark scarf. The swag rap of YT and Kwes E. and the road rap intensity of BXKS. But my favorite moments belong to Chy Cartier, a London rapper who single-handedly rekindles my interest in the British drill with her effortless trash talk. Nonchalantly grabbing the mic at the 25-minute mark, in a cropped black coat with bubbles and bangs nearly covering her eyes, she goes for two short, snappy verses that had the other rappers in the room acting like they were watching NBA Slam Dunk Contest. As Cartier alternates between ballistic words and voices “Bap” over and over again, she's the coolest rapper in the room, which, in these crowded, competitive cryptos, is what it really takes to stand out.
With artists releasing songs fast and furious, it's hard for the average hip-hop head to keep track of them all — no matter how well-rounded they are. That's why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
