Exodus1900 and Zootzie: “Shopping”
There's a Presbyterian church in Ridgewood that makes a few extra bucks hosting underground rap and rowdy, and last weekend I walked into the church where a few teenagers were gathered around the rapper Cell phones crouching on the ground like Gollum. There, the Sellasouls, their long hair hiding their faces, mostly made a bunch of profanities, ready to flow as if they were speaking in code. It seemed as if a spirit was being summoned or that at any moment the music would stop and someone would be chosen as a sacrifice. Nice, I guess?
The next set I was rocking with a bit more: Their name was Exodus1900 and they were mostly growling over high-speed, overlapping beats that were downright wild. Exodus even did a little mosh circle that went between the unusually sober (no drinking or smoking in the church) and intimate crowd. I went home and opened Exodus' SoundCloud page. it's full of stuffy, dark, neglected music. The song that caught my attention the most is “Shopping” featuring Zootzie, mostly because it's like waking up after a night of drinking to your little cousin playing Mario Kart in full blast. It's such a clash of sound effects that I can barely hear what Exodus and Zootzie are saying. I have no idea where I would even hear a song like that, but I bet it would come out in church.
With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it's hard for the average hip-hop master to keep track of them all — no matter how well-developed they are. That's why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
