Lorde and Charli XCX both found clarity after working on the “Girl, So Confusing” remix. But before he jumped into the fan favorite Brat song, the New Zealand singer-songwriter says she felt quite misunderstood by her friend.
Talk about Charli's new Advertising sign cover, Lorde opened up about her take on the cathartic experience of recording the remix. The English alt-pop star had originally sent her counterpart the track as a casual message about the strain she was feeling in their friendship, a move the 'Solar Power' musician said inspired “as deep an empathy for my friend as and for that. feeling of, “Man, I've been misunderstood and I really want to make it right.”
In response, Lorde almost immediately suggested we collaborate on a joint remix. “I don't know if you like me/ Sometimes I think you might hate me/ Sometimes I think I might hate you,” Charlie sings on the track before her duet partner raps with her, “You'd always say, 'Let's go out '/ But then I'll cancel at the last minute/ I was so lost in my head/ And I was afraid to be in your pictures.”
“When I was writing that verse, I was saying these things to her for the first time,” Lorde said Advertising sign. “There was such rawness and directness to what I was saying. I love that we really nailed it on the remix. There is something very brat for that, something very post and modern.”
“Only Charlie could do that,” he continued. “He had opened a channel between us and made me say things I had never said before.”
The cover comes just over a month after the “Von Dutch” singer released her critically acclaimed album. Brat, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200—her highest chart peak to date—as well as inspired a wave of new internet trends. Many fans see it as a commercial triumph for the tastemaker—as does Lorde, who noted, “Charli's it was doing this.”
