Los Temerarios were originally scheduled to play two shows in Chicago as part of their Hasta Siempre farewell tour, but quickly expanded to a total of five non-consecutive shows at the Allstate Arena. Chicago was no exception. The number of shows in major Latin markets, including Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston, doubled or tripled immediately after the tour was announced. It's something that David Zamorathe CEO of Zamora Live – the promoter of the trek – had prepared.
“When we were planning the tour, we booked a lot of dates with the assumption that since it was the farewell tour, we would add shows,” Zamora explains. “I think all of this shows how much the fans love Los Temerarios and how much they will miss them. These are memories for a lifetime.”
On Wednesday (November 6), the Mexican band – fronted by brothers Adolfo and Gustavo Ángel – held the second of their shows at Allstate where thousands of fans gathered to see Los Temerarios together one last time. Gustavo and Adolfo, who founded the band in the 80s, announced last year that they were splitting after more than four decades together and a total of 41 appearances Bulletin boardThe Hot Latin Songs chart and 46 entries on the Top Latin Albums — more than any other Latin act in history.
On this particular night, the crowd skewed older millennials, many decked out in Temerarios merch. They were there to celebrate a band whose music has helped heal many a broken heart. “It takes me back to when I was a teenager and I would be sad in my room because my boyfriend had just broken up with me. These are the songs I would listen to,” says Yvette, who was there with a group of friends. “Their music means so much to me. It's nostalgia, it's Mexico,” adds her friend Lucia, who almost gets emotional.
As concertgoers filled every seat in the arena — which has a capacity of nearly 20,000 — the show began at 8:30 p.m. with Adolfo, on keyboards, and frontman Gustavo taking the stage with their five-piece live band. The crowd, standing for most of the nearly three-hour show, roared at the sight of the brothers, who gave each a high five before embarking on the nostalgia trip.
“What a beautiful welcome,” said Gustavo. “We are very blessed to have you here tonight. It's the kind of support you've shown us for so many years. We have so many memories here in this city, where we've been performing since 1985.”
Los Temerarios performed the signature romantic love songs that have made die-hard fans swoon time and time again, such as 'Mi Vida Eres Tú', 'Eres Un Sueño', 'Como te Recuerdo', 'Dímelo', 'La Mujer Que Soñé', 'La Mujer de Los Dos' and 'Ven Porque Te Necesito', to name just a few of the packed setlist. From cumbia grupera to rancheras and pop ballads, Adolfo and Gustavo showcased their vast catalog singing all the big hits for their final hoorah.
The brothers mostly stayed put. Adolfo, who occasionally flashes shy smiles to his faithful followers, behind the keyboards and Gustavo is the charismatic frontman who knows exactly what to say and do to get the crowd going. Both are perfectly in sync, after all they have been doing it for many years.
“My heart feels very emotional,” Adolfo added at one point. “I'm sorry if you suddenly feel overcome with emotion, but my heart is overflowing with gratitude. We will play all the songs you want. Our shows usually last two hours, but today we will be playing for three hours. We hope you have an unforgettable evening. We will never forget you. Thank you, always.”
Befitting a farewell performance, Los Temerarios delivered an epic set piece that didn't need elaborate set pieces, intricate choreography or even a bombastic production. Adolfo and Gustavo were simply doing what they do best: singing from the heart the songs that have soundtracked multi-generational Spanish homes for decades.
Los Temerarios' Hasta Siempre tour continues with three additional dates in Chicago from November 7-9 and stops in Portland, Anaheim, California, and two shows at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. On tour from February 2023, the Mexican band will conclude the trip in Mexico City in December.
