Lupe Fiasco has long held the distinction of being one of the sharpest lyricists in Hip-Hop, and has also shown and proven that he is skilled in the art of combat. During his set at Coachella over the weekend, the Chicago rapper warned any rapper who wants to try his pen in a provocative speech that people on the internet would react in kind.
I'm going to break the wall here and state that I think Lupe Fiasco may very well be the best lyricist on paper in modern Hip-Hop. Songs like “Mural”, “The Cool” and countless others demonstrate his immense skill as a writer, but also reveal the deep layers of his abilities.
As I've written about in the past, the quick back-and-forth between him and the 5'9 Royce Da was largely ended by an inspired Lupe Fiasco on the “Steve Jobs: SLR 3 1/2” piece that I still believe was in largely free or at least delivered in one download. Everyone should know and understand that Lu is a dangerous MC if one is a student of this game.
During a break in his Coachella set, Lupe addressed the crowd as much as he could and let loose a barrage of profanity saying that in no uncertain terms no rapper on the planet can out-rhyme him.
“Hear me clearly when I say this and I mean it from my heart. When it comes to this art, and I quote, I'll fight any mama rapper. Anywhere. Any mom,” Lupe said to a raucous crowd.
This statement from Lupe has the culture in a bit of a daze considering the fake shenanigans between Drake, Rick Ross, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar with K-Dot alone putting a powerful bullet in the names while the shenanigans are front and center from all others. Even promoters of battle rap culture like Aye Verb got involved and seemingly called out Lupe via X, but that was shut down somewhat quickly.
However, Lupe did join Aye Verb in a Twitter Spaces chat and explained his position on Kendrick Lamar and other rappers.
At X, we've got some reaction to Lupe Fiasco announcing the game, Aye Verb's Twitter Spaces chat, and more.
