Manny Martínez, one of the Misfits' first drummers, has died at the age of 69.
Depending on the interpretation of the Misfits timeline, Martínez was the Misfits' first or second drummer, forming a lineup with classic members Jerry Only and Glenn Danzig. However, Martínez was definitely the first drummer to appear on an official recording with the band and, in fact, helped introduce Only and Danzig.
Martinez's friend Zach Rector shared the news of the drummer's death. Facebook:
“I'm going to miss you Brother Manny Martínez / A true living legend, student of Buddy Rich. I remember Manny telling me on multiple occasions how Buddy brought out his skills while he was coming up, and his stories about his family's famous bar… A period of the original Misfits. Everyone stands up, always talking about work and progress in my house. I would call him and talk a lot about carpentry issues and how I should solve the reconfiguration of my upstairs apartment in this old house of mine that was built in 1872. …more than just a musician, artist and carpenter…he was my friend, Rest easy Manny ”.
Martínez's only Misfits credits are on the debut single “Cough/Cool” and its B-side “She,” released in 1977 (and included on a self-titled compilation in 1996). She would go on to play a few live shows with the band before leaving the group later that year.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Manny Martínez during this difficult time. Below you can check out Martínez's two recordings with the Misfits on their debut 7-inch single.
