“My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed,” said the former First Lady.
Marian Robinson, n The mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama has died at the age of 86.
Robinson's death was confirmed by the former First Lady on social media Friday. “My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed,” Michelle wrote. “He was the same constant backstop for our entire family and we are devastated to share that he has passed away today.”
In a separate statement, former President Barack Obama remembered Marian, who was a fixture at the White House during his eight years in office. “Marian Lois Shields Robinson—our mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother—had a way of summing up truths about life in a word or two, perhaps a quick phrase that made everyone around her stop and think. Her wisdom appeared almost innate, like something she was born with, but it was actually hard-earned, shaped by her deep understanding that the world's roughest edges could always be smoothed with a little grace.”
Robinson moved to Washington, DC, in 2009 after living her entire life in Chicago to help care for her grandchildren Malia and Sasha, who were seven and 10 at the time. “I felt like this would be a very difficult life for both of them,” he told CBS interview in relation to her daughter and son-in-law. “And I was worried about their safety, and I was worried about my grandchildren. That's what made me move to DC.”
In his statement, the former president said that “as a mother,” Robinson was the “backstop of the family, a calm and nonjudgmental witness to our triumphs and our stumbles.” He added, “He was always, always there, welcoming us back home no matter how far we had traveled, with that deep and abiding love.”
