Mat Kearney has found the sweet spot in his career. The singer-songwriter's North American tour in support of his self-titled album could be called The Beautiful, Couple-Thousand-Seat Theater tour. In his hometown of Nashville, Kearney will play the Roman Theater, a former tabernacle and home of the Grand Ol' Opry. It will also play the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, Wisc., the Vic Theater in Chicago, the Majestic Theater in Dallas and The Orpheum Theater in Boston, among others.
“There's basically no better room to play than a few thousand in a theater,” says Kearney Advertising sign'small Behind the Setlist podcast. “Sounds the best. There's enough of a collective energy that feels special.”
Not that Kearney doesn't want to play bigger venues. But eight albums into his music career, which began when Kearney began writing songs as a football player studying English at California State University, Chico in Northern California, the Oregon native is pleased with the level of success he's been able to maintain.
“I can't tell you how lucky I feel in this season of life,” Kearney says. “There are times when you dream, like, 'I just need one more big smash to play the [amphitheaters] everywhere.' As humans, we love to desire that next stage beyond where we perceive ourselves to be right now. [being] better or the goal. And I still want big songs that connect with the world. But there is something about the season of life that I have embraced and enjoyed so much.”
Two decades into a recording career, Kearney released music on a major label (Republic Records owned by Universal Music Group, currently the most successful label in the country and home to Taylor Swift). The 12 ari Matt Kearney, on which he was supported by the band The Brook & The Bluff, was released on indie (Middle Kid Records). It has met with success (in 2011 New love went to No. 4 on the Billboard 200) and quieter periods. At this point, highs and lows don't phase him.
