Maxïmo Park announced new album today life stream for release on September 27 via Lower Third. News of the band’s eighth studio album comes alongside the release of its lead single “Your Own Worst Enemy.”
The road to life stream saw the band team up once again with Ben Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective), Grammy-winning producer of 2021's near-chart-topping pandemic-era tour de force. Nature always winsand, as a result, marks the first time they've all been in the studio together to make an album since 2016.

It finds the band in perhaps the most reflective state they have ever been in. Lead singer Paul Smith, the most enlightened pop lyricist, took the album's title from a short story by Ukrainian-born Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, inspired by both. its stream-of-consciousness style and the way it prompts reflection on the inner workings of people's minds. The question arises as to why they do the things they do, even when they may seem contradictory to the outsider. There is an internal flow in each individual: a current of life.
Both form and concept merge satisfactorily in how life stream how it was created (recorded quickly, making quick decisions, not heavily edited) and, more specifically, how 'Your Own Worst Enemy' becomes a study in deception. Consider the things we hide from ourselves and others to maintain some inner balance.
Commenting on the single, singer Paul Smith says: “'Your Own Worst Enemy' has a different feel to anything we've done before: loose and lean, but still rocking! “It's about that horrible feeling when you suddenly realize you've made a family mistake and also about the lies we tell ourselves every day to avoid confrontation or chaos.”
Continuing about the album he says: “We have always tried to document the world around us at every stage of our lives while subtly pushing the music forward each time; This album continues that mission. It was great to be back in a studio after recording remotely last time. Working with Ben on Atlanta and Burke on Byker was more exhilarating than ever and I think we captured that energy. Thematically, the album covers passion, politics and privilege, among other topics.”
