Here's creator Cirocco Dunlap's basic pitch for Prime Video The second best hospital in the galaxy: “Two best friends in space, who are doctors and deal with every kind of sci-fi case the galaxy has to offer.” It barely scratches the surface of the wacky animated series, which features an impressive voice cast; The series is led by Keke Palmer and Stephanie Hsu as the aforementioned best friends Sleech and Klak, and the rest of the cast includes Kieran Culkin, all of Culkin's siblings, Sam Smith, Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne.
The last two are executive producers of the series as well as voice actors, and as Lyonne tells Consequence, was “very flattered” that Dunlap wanted to collaborate on the series. “It meant a lot to me, because it is exactly my dream of a life in this business; It's great that we're here talking about the program that Cirocco created. She's the showrunner, it's her creation, and Amazon accepted it immediately. “It was a really clean road.”
Lyonne first worked with Dunlap when the latter wrote for the acclaimed Netflix series. Russian dollalthough Lyonne was also familiar with Dunlap's contributions to The New Yorker'Shouts and murmurs'. “I remember really falling in love with his writing style. It was like, who is this person? “Just this extraordinary mind that was so funny and so precise and so open, but also so grounded.”
Impressed by Dunlap's work, Lyonne not only joined the show, but recruited Rudolph; Rudolph says she responded quickly to Dunlap's unique point of view. “We have to hold this little mind of beauty in our hands and say, 'Whatever you want to do, let's do it,'” she says. “When he first described the show to me, what I remember most is the time sickness. The sickness of time was one of the ailments that arose. And I thought, this is a very brilliant human being and I can't wait to work on this show. Who else thinks about bad weather?
In the series, Rudolph plays Dr. Vlam, a robot doctor with a rich backstory. However, discovering Vlam's voice was a challenge for Rudolph, because his initial thought was “like a lady with GPS. In fact, I had a hard time figuring out who she was.”
In general, when Rudolph isn't immediately sure what kind of approach to use for a character, he does exactly what he did with Second Best Hospital: “I try to think, 'Okay, what have I seen?' Or I say to the creator: 'Do you have an idea? Does he look like someone I know? In this one we took different paths and then I think we found her. It was Cirocco who really didn't want to just go for “robot.” [because] How long has she been alive, 20,000 years? So she's seen a lot of life and she's lived a lot of lives and she's lived in different times. And that was the interesting approach.”
