Megan Thee Stallion has proven her dedication to both her music and her love of anime with a last-minute twist just days before the release of her third studio album. Megan.
The Houston rapper took to Instagram Live on June 26 to share some behind-the-scenes drama with her fans, the Hotties, about being forced to record the track “Otaku Hot Girl” due to unexpected licensing issues with a major anime studio.
During her Instagram Live session, Megan explained how she originally recorded “Otaku Hot Girl” without securing proper permission for an anime sample she used in the song.
The Grammy-winning artist did not reveal which anime series or studio it was referring to, but assured fans that the sample would be instantly recognizable.
“You'll never believe what happened to me mom!” Megan exclaimed to her followers.
“You know how I told you I have an anime sample on my album. I recorded the song before I asked for permission, so when I sent people the song, it was like…” Megan paused dramatically, then explained the studio's terms: she had to change some of the lyrics, and she wasn't allowed to co-star any characters in the music video .
The demands didn't stop there.
Megan shared that the studio later requested that all character names be removed from the song, which presented a significant challenge since the names were critical to the lyrics.
Despite the disappointment, Megan re-recorded the track in a makeshift studio just hours before her show in Dallas on June 11.
“The music is what's really important to me, but the names really tied it all together,” he explained.
Megan's determination paid off and she expressed her gratitude to the studio for finally giving the go-ahead. “I really hope you think this s**t sounds like fire, because I had to jump through eight million hoops to get this s**t,” he added.
“Otaku Hot Girl” is one of 18 tracks on Megan's upcoming album, which includes the singles “Cobra,” “Hiss,” and “Boa,” as well as collaborations with artists such as Kyle Rich, GloRilla, UGK, and Victoria Monét.
The album follows almost two years after her second release, Traumatazine.
