Miley Cyrus is hard at work on a new album titled something beautifuland has been inspired by Pink Floyd's seminal 1979 concept album. the wall and the accompanying film.
Cyrus spoke about her new venture in a recent interview with Harper's Bazaarreferring to it for the first time as “a visual album” that will be released sometime in 2025. He is working with veteran independent producer Shawn Everett on the musical side, as well as director Panos Cosmatos on the visual side; Cosmatos directed the 2018 horror film. mandywhich Cyrus mentions as another important reference point for her new material.
Most of all, though, Cyrus wants to capture the same feeling she had when she saw the wall when I was a teenager. “We really leaned in. And that's why I have this sincere attachment to it,” he said of the 1982 companion film. “My idea was to make the wall, but with better and more glamorous costumes and full of pop culture.”
In addition to describing the album as “mesmerizing and glamorous,” Cyrus calls the project “a concept album that is an attempt to medicate a sick culture through music.” She elaborated on the visual aspect, saying: “It was important to me that each song had these healing sonic properties. The songs, whether about destruction, heartbreak or death, are presented in a beautiful way, because the most unpleasant moments in our lives have a point of beauty. They are the shadow, they are the charcoal, they are the shading. “You can’t have a painting without reflections and contrast.”
Cosmatos is certainly a fan, describing the album as “more experimental than anything I've done, but in a pop way that I love.” Everett echoed her claims, telling the magazine that when working with Cyrus, “you feel like you've known her forever and she gives you the grace to feel that way.”
In addition to collaborating with Cosmatos and Everett, Cyrus also recruited her boyfriend Maxx Morando, producer and drummer for the band Liily, to produce several songs on the project. Morando, who also worked on Cyrus' last album Endless summer vacationhe directed the song “Something Beautiful” featuring Cyrus, which is currently slated to be the title track of the new album.
In another part of his talk with Harper's Bazaar Cyrus talks about reaching out to Chappell Roan when his profile skyrocketed this summer. “I wish people wouldn't give him a hard time,” Cyrus said. “It's probably very difficult to get into this business with phones and Instagram. That wasn't always a part of my life, and I'm not a part of it now. “I don't even have my Instagram password.”
After taking home her first set of Grammy Awards earlier this year, Cyrus has been fairly quiet throughout 2024. She contributed a cover of “Psycho Killer” to The Talking Heads tribute album.
