Cardi B has been teasing news of her unplanned, untitled sophomore album for months. The “Bongos” MC has given no indication of how far along or when we can expect the follow-up to her masterful 2018 debut album, Breach of privacybut over the weekend she got some killer advice from Missy Elliott about the importance of listening to your inner voice.
During a Twitter discussion Saturday about the new LP, one fan suggested, “your second album is not the time to experiment… maybe the third album but definitely not the second.. just give the people what they need. He still has to win people back.”
This bit of unsolicited advice prompted a response from legendary rule-breaker Elliott, who replied: “Absolutely yes, it's time to experiment, take it from someone who has and many others who have allowed themselves to NOT LOCATE on a sound and style… i can name tons that each album didn't sound at all like the last [smiley face emoji].”
Elliott's sage advice seemed to help Cardi calm her fears as she replied, “Yes!!! I'm a little nervous… but I don't care! I like to make things that my ears want to hear and that reflect the moods I've been in. It's nice.”
Last week, Cardi celebrated her sixth anniversary Invasionof the release, while dropping another teaser for her next season. “6 years ago I released my first album and it broke so many records GAH LEE!!” She wrote the LP that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart and won a Grammy for Best Rap album in 2019 while releasing the Hot 100 No. 1 singles “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It.” “6 years later I'm getting ready to drop the next one this year.. it's so different to what everyone expects and I'm so excited. Love you guys and thanks for the support! I'll talk to you soon, I've been so busy these past few days.”
Cardi released the single “Enough (Miami)” on March 15 along with the Patience Harding-directed video for the track that served as the follow-up to her “Like What (Freestyle).” He also featured on the opening track from Shakira's new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran album, “Puntería”.
