The Georgia congresswoman described the natural phenomena as “strong signs telling us to repent.”
Mild earthquake hit New York and parts of the Northeast on Friday. The most remarkable thing about the earthquake was the rarity of any kind of perceptible seismic activity in the tri-state area. Marjorie Taylor Greene had an explanation, writing on X (formerly Twitter) that the earthquake was evidence of God's displeasure with America.
“God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent. Earthquakes and eclipses and more to come. I pray our country will listen,” the Georgia Republican warned.
Green also mentioned the total solar eclipse that will be visible in some parts of the United States on Monday. While eclipses are natural phenomena that scientists can accurately predict, some far-right figures promote strange conspiracies surrounding the event. Masonic rituals, satanic rights, and even the arrival of the New World Order have all been invoked as possible events during the brief darkening of the heavens. Greene at least seems to agree that the moon blocking the sun is little more than another machination of the universe.
Earthquakes are also well-documented natural phenomena, of course, explained not by a deity's feelings for people in a particular region, but by the shifting of the tectonic plates that make up the Earth's crust. While we're sure Greene, like most Americans, learned this in an elementary school science class, her reading of Friday's earthquake in New York City seems to have been more informed by her long history of conspiracy thinking.
Who could forget when the congresswoman blamed the 2018 California wildfires to jewish space lasers? Or when he suggested that Democrats were intentionally setting fires in food processing plants? Or the various times he suggested mass shootings were deliberately orchestrated false flags? Or when he said the floods at the 2023 Burning Man festival were “God's way of making sure everyone knows who God is.”
Monday's eclipse is unlikely to usher in the biblical apocalypse, but if you decide to witness one of the most spectacular astronomical events observed from our planet, be sure to wear safety glasses, so as not to regret the serious damage to the eyes.
