Muni Long now has a chance to bring home a second Grammy for Best R&B Performance. The singer-songwriter received a second nod in that category when the Recording Academy revealed on Friday (November 8) her nomination for the 67th Grammy Awards — this time for her live performance of “Made for Me (Live on BET )”
Long also leads this year's list of R&B Grammy nominees, scoring three additional awards: Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Make Me Forget”), Best R&B Song (“Ruined Me”) and Best R&B album (Revenge). She received her first Grammy win at the 65th annual awards ceremony for her vocal work on her hit 'Hrs and Hrs'.
Following Long, these R&B stars are tied with two nominations each in the R&B categories: Chris Brown, Coco Jones, SZA, Lucky Daye, Kehlani and Lalah Hathaway. Jhené Aiko and Childish Gambino also received nods.
It's a strong Grammy performance for Brown this time around. In addition to nods for Best R&B Performance (“Residuals”) and Best R&B album ( 11:11 [Deluxe]), also earned a third nomination in the Best African Music Performance category for “Sensational,” which also featured Davido and Lojay. Tems, one of four other artists competing against Brown in this category (with “Love Me Jeje”), is also nominated for Best R&B Song (“Burning”).
Continuing a comeback fueled by this year's Super Bowl halftime show and tour, Usher earned a Best R&B album nomination for his first solo effort since 2016. Back home. Also of note is Marsha Ambrosius' best traditional R&B performance nod for “Wet,” giving the singer-songwriter her 10th Grammy nomination. The track is shown on Casablancaexecutive produced by Dr. Dre and Ambrosius' first studio album from 2018.
SZA continues her reign with the hit “Saturn,” which is up for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance. Also earning key recognition this year: Kehlani for Best R&B Song (“After Hours”) and Best Progressive R&B album (Conflict) Lucky Daye for Best Traditional R&B Performance (“That's You”) and Best R&B album (Algorithm) plus Coco Jones for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance (both for “Here We Go (Uh Oh).” Jones won her first Grammy for Best R&B Performance for “ICU” last year Feb. Kehlani is also the featured guest on Jordan Adetunji's hit “Kehlani,” which is nominated in the Best Rap Melodic category.
The unexpected nominations category includes names like longtime indie favorite Avery*Sunshine (Nice to meet you) and the lively artist Durand Bernarr (On the way), both for Best Progressive R&B album. Among the unexpected snubs: Bryson Tiller, 4batz, PartyNextDoor and Tyla, however album-pop-category-1236035289/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>THR was mentioned that the singer's self-titled debut album had moved from Best R&B album to Best Pop Vocal album.
The 67th Grammy Awards are set to air on February 2nd on CBS.
