Mustard sits down and tells us what it was like creating 'Faith of a Mustard Seed', his creative direction on the album, how he chooses his collaborators and more. 'Faith of a Mustard Seed' is out on July 26th.
Mustard:
And he said, “Well, if you don't call it that, you should make an album called 'Faith of a Mustard Seed'”.
Tetris Kelly:
You took a break from it for five years, so you're finally back. Why was now the time?
Mustard:
I think I'm just working out the kinks like what I wanted… I wanted people to hear from me. Life just goes on, you know.
Tetris Kelly:
Life will life.
Mustard:
I'm just taking my time.
Tetris Kelly:
So you decided to name the album “Faith of a Mustard Seed”. Now do you feel like the energy from Nipsey and what have you learned from those conversations that that kind of carried over into the music and how you created this work?
Mustard:
Yeah, it's kind of weird how it came about because I had a completely different title for this album. And I was — I started making music towards that. And then I was talking to my mom one day on the phone saying, “When are you going to sing me a song? … Something I would like, something older, something for me.” And he's a really big Luther Vandross fan, and I tried a Luther Vandross song, but I grew up listening to so much Luther Vandross at home, I'm talking about hard Luther Vandross. I just made this song, Masego played on the song, Ty's on the song, Charlie Wilson on the song.
