Nelly Furtado shares how she came up with and executed her steamy, girly track “Maneater.”
Nelly Furtado:
Hi, I’m Nelly Furtado and that’s how it happened with my song “Maneater.” It was a story that started in Miami, Florida on a hot summer night, mid-July. I think it was our first night in the studio together, so he had some spice to play for me. I was working with Danjahandz, Nate Hills, another producer at the time. We were jamming really loud and we smelled smoke. We smelled a burning smell. And there was smoke coming out of the speaker and then a flame coming out of the speaker. The truth is that the beat was so fierce that it kind of scared us and we actually didn’t play that song again after that. When we weren’t scared of the beat of “Maneater” anymore, we took it back and created the song. One of my colleagues was dating a beautiful woman, and she was like a total man-eater, she was so sexy and powerful and composed, and she seemed to really be in control of that beauty and power. That was my inspiration for some of the songs. I was also trying to capture that rough style of some of the electro pop bands I was listening to at the time, which had a kind of sexiness to that kind of rock sound, so we just wanted to bring that into the mix as well.
