Most Beautiful Pop Song of the Week: Omar Apollo, “Spite”
The guitar line on Omar Apollo's “Spite” is jagged and choppy, a simple lick that doubles and beats the steady beat. Apollo approaches his new single in a similar way: “Spite” is smooth but never easy, as Apollo examines the wrong possibilities and unfortunate circumstances surrounding a long-distance relationship that should probably end but remains muddled in his mind. “Every time I see you on my phone / I hate that I still need you in my life!” he croons, his voice rising in displeasure, but then comes to a sad conclusion: “I still want to take you on a date.”
Apollo's professional successes, from his first singles to the TikTok viral 'Evergreen' to the Grammy's Best New Artist, have largely depended on his voice and how he develops its impressive power. “Spite,” which precedes a forthcoming sophomore album, puts his gentle singing front and center but provides new depth, oscillating between passion and weakness with equal parts strength and restraint. The show calls for nuance—many of those wounded choruses shout rather than mock—and Apollo meets the moment.
The first disc Ivory showed that Apollo possesses a unique skill set, but “Spite” nicely shows his potential development in the sequel. This is in addition, of course, to throw another stylish jam into his discography.
