Look out Nike, there's a hot new item on the resale market, and it's not coming from a competitor in the athletic apparel arena.
Over the past week and change, Stanley Cups (not to be confused with the NHL Stanley Cup) have become the hottest accessory on the streets (or bourbons depending on how you look at it) and people are paying big bucks on the secondary market to own one. Things are getting so crazy that according to TMZ a limited edition Stanley Quencher Starbucks cup had people reaching out and getting their hands on it to the point where breaking the law became an option for some.
TMZ reports:
It's pretty wild, and a sign of the times… the pink cups retail for $49.95 at Starbucks locations inside Targets, and people who managed to snag them are turning around and shopping them online for hundreds of dollars.
Resellers are working hard for that big payday, though… the only way to get your hands on the cups seems to be camping outside of Target for hours or fighting your way through massive crowds in tents straight out of Black Friday.
Other people go to even greater lengths to try to make money – like the guy who he jumped a bench and tried, unsuccessfully, to steal an entire box of pink goodies.
We've said it before and we'll say it again: it's not that serious!
The way the hype has built up at this point behind some cups is outdated, but it's now a thing in 2024 as $50 cups go for up to $300 online. All this so that people can use it on Instagram and TikTok to show how they drink their drinks from a popular cup.
How long before Nike teams up with the Stanley Cup for a limited sneaker? All hell would break loose for them.
