From Elvis Presley and Bob Marley to Amy Winehouse and Elton John, big-budget biopics about high-profile musicians have been a big trend in cinemas lately. Joining the group this fall will be Pharrell Williams, the iconic founder of NERD and The Neptunes, who has shared the trailer for his upcoming biopic. Piece by piece.
The hip-hop and fashion luminary, however, is taking a different approach than those behind the intimate, gritty cinema of his contemporaries. Williams chose to tell his story entirely through LEGO animation to Piece by piece.
The Lego Group has released the official trailer for the film, in which Williams talks about his decision to showcase his career in the form of plastic bricks, much to the surprise of director Morgan Neville. The trailer offers a LEGO glimpse into his childhood, early recording sessions and collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Timbaland, Jay-Z and more.
As all electronic music fans are wondering, no, the LEGO version of Daft Punk does not appear in the trailer. However, there is still hope to see the legendary French duo in Piece by piece considering his Grammy-winning collaboration with Williams, “Get Lucky” is featured.
