J. Bernardt is the solo moniker of singer/songwriter Jinte Deprez. Deprez first cut his teeth as one half of the singer/songwriter duo behind Belgian alt rock band Balthazar before later releasing his 2017 debut solo LP. Running Days. Fans last heard from Deprez with the release of Balthazar in 2021 Sandbut later this week he returns with another new solo album, Contigoout May 17 via Play It Again Sam.
Contigo sees Deprez move away from coloring electronics Running Days and rests on a full-band sound, with dramatic orchestral elements and grooves. Thematically, the record is an exploration of the phases of a breakup. “I know the record breaking is a cliché,” says Deprez. “But I love clichés! I wasn't afraid to go all the way. Forgetting the breakup by singing about it is like self-sabotage, but I'm having fun with it too.”
Deprez has already shared a number of singles from the record, most recently returning with “Last Waltz,” and today he's back with an early listen of one of the album's highlights, “Don't Get Me Wrong,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Don't Get Me Wrong” is a simmering and dancing track, starting with a weak bass line and hidden vocal melodies. Much of the song's energy comes from the insistent percussion and driving symphonic horns and strings. Handclaps and tambourine drive the song's lyrics forward, building until all the built-up tension explodes outwards with a groovy chorus and an instrumental horn break. The results feel cinematic in the same vein as a vintage Bond film, full of style, bite and effortless charm.
Deprez says of the track, “'Don't Get Me Wrong' takes a walk through communication skills that aren't appropriate, even fueled by a sabotaging desire of two people who choose projection over self-reflection. It is an old habit of most of us to feed the fire until the house burns down.'
