It looks like Sony is keen to get back into the mobile gaming market after the surprise success of PS Portal.
According to a Bloomberg reportSony is developing a new handheld game console that will allow players to play PlayStation 5 games without being connected to the internet or the console.
The site reports that Sony is building the console to compete with Nintendo, which currently dominates the handheld gaming market, with the Nintendo Switch and its successor, rumored to arrive in 2025, only to strengthen that dominance. Microsoft is also currently building its own handheld gaming device, which is “a few years out.” Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer revealed.
Portable PC gaming consoles like Valve's Steam Deck and Asus' ROG Ally have also made big strides in the portable gaming market.
PlayStation wants to build on the success of PS Portal, the eight-inch gaming device that brings PS5 games to the cloud via Wi-Fi and the PS5 console's remote play capability. Bloomberg reports that Sony originally intended the PS Portal to be a standalone device to expand the audience for PlayStation games.
If this is the case, it will mark the PlayStation's return to an area that is very familiar thanks to previous devices, the PSP (PlayStation Portable) and its successor, the PS Vita.
