Quavo has been drinking and rapping about “Good Drank” for a long time before the thought of breaking into the liquor industry entered his mind.
That all changed on Thursday night (June 6) with the official launch of Huncho's White X Cognac. Produced in conjunction with Sazerac Spirits, Quavo rented out New York hot-spot restaurant Carbone for about 40 friends and family for an intimate cognac tasting and four courses of top Italian cuisine.
“I just thought I'd stand in front of something and be the face of some good drink,” says Quavo Advertising sign. “White X are unapologetic and ready to bend the rules a bit, so it's only right that they choose the frontman of the culture to represent it.”
The Migos rapper continued the effort: “They were looking for someone who fit the same aesthetic as me and I think it made perfect sense. We can't wait to get into the industry and continue.”
White X wants to give a vibrant youthful energy and usher in a new era for the bustling cognac lane. With a straw color and hints of peach and vanilla mixed with light grapes, the 80-proof French liqueur pours much smoother than its VSOP competitors. In a tribute to the late takeoff, the Rocket Power (White X, Gran Gala and lemon juice) served as the cocktail of the night.
However, this isn't Quavo's first foray into the alcohol business. He was linked to another cognac earlier in his career, which ended up falling through. Now, Huncho is trying to take those lessons learned and make sure White X doesn't suffer a similar fate.
“I learned from my mistakes there,” he adds. “I wanted to do something different. Just the bottom line is, I don't know how big the brand could be if you let these people know what you're about.” The 33-year-old points out that she makes more content and participates in her daily transformation into a “lifestyle” brand, rather than posing with the product for fun.
White X is for sale across the United States in clubs, bars and beverage distributors with a suggested retail price of $59.99 per 750ml bottle.
Although there was no television in the confines of the famous Italian restaurant, basketball fans still found a way to check in on game one of the NBA Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics on their phones.
A hoops fanatic himself, Quavo's heart is with the Mavericks because of the relationship between superstar Luka Doncic and his late nephew, Takeoff.
“I got Dallas,” says the “Hotel Lobby” rhymer when asked to pick a winner. “The only reason I like Dallas is because Luca and Takeoff had a crazy relationship. I think he was a fan of the gang, so he was rocking.'
There's no doubt that Quavo and Migos were among the most influential artists of the 21st century who helped shape the sound of rap for the 2010s and kept the spotlight on Atlanta. civilization. “You know, I'm a real trendsetter,” he boasts. “We're taking it to the moon. You know we'll have some sparklers for it in someone's department around the world.”
Time will tell if he can bring the established ways that made him a diamond-certified rapper to carry over to his hip-hop ventures with notables like 50 Cent, Kanye West, Travis Scott and others.
“We've got some great years to come — it's a fresh start,” Huncho promises before raising his glass for a toast. “We represent the culture and we don't apologize, of course. We will work at any time.”
