Rayful Edmond, once the most powerful drug kingpin in Washington, DC during the so-called “Crack Era,” was moved from federal prison to a halfway house. According to reports, Rayful Edmond is being held at a facility in Nashville, Tenn.
Local Washington store Fox 5 DC reports that Rayful Edmond, 59, was taken Wednesday (July 31) to the median by the Nashville Federal Bureau of Prisons Residential Reentry Management Office. The news outlet added that Edmond is either under house arrest, a residential re-entry center or a halfway house.
Edmond oversaw a massive crack cocaine ring in the 1980s and his meteoric rise up the drug food chain came with the necessary violence that included murders carried out on his behalf that turned the streets of Washington into a literal war zone. Edmond was also known for his lavish spending, and he also became something of a mythical and even beloved figure by some.
Ruling by fear heightened by the threat of violence from his soldiers, Edmond ran his drug ring with the precision of a Fortune 500 company until his penchant for living hard finally led authorities to shut him down. Edmond was previously serving a life sentence without parole on mounting federal drug charges after pleading guilty in 1989.
Edmond continued to deal drugs while in prison, resulting in his subsequent arrest in 1994. From there, Edmond turned his organization upside down and cooperated with federal investigators, a point in his life that has been heavily documented by many outlets.
