Raygun, a b-girl who competed for Australia in the inaugural breaking competition at this year's Summer Olympics, turned heads during the event with questionable dance moves and went viral on memes. Raygun announced during an interview with an Australian newspaper that she will no longer compete in the break and will retire.
Raygun, real name Rachael Gunn, was a guest The Jimmy & Nath Show and explained why she is stepping away from the sport of breaking after receiving negative feedback about her time in the competition. With that said, Gunn says her love of dance has taken her to the world stage, but that competition is no longer on the table for her after the backlash.
“I'm not going to fight anymore, no,” Gunn said earlier this week. “I would definitely continue to fight, but that seems very difficult to do now to get close to a fight.”
Far from broke, Gunn is a lecturer at Macquarie University's School of the Arts for the Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language and Literature. Gunn famously wrote her PhD thesis, 'Deterritorializing Gender in Sydney's Breakdancing Scene: A B-girl's Experience of B-boying', from her perspective of engaging with breaking in her home country.
Raygun did not score a single point during her tenure at the Summer Olympics, leading many on the Internet to believe that she was put on the stage as a means to garner ratings or cause controversy. Gunn has since denied the claim.
