YEDM introduced Millennium Resorts to our readers in anticipation of its In the key of David debuted her album with the first single, “Happiness,” late last month. A resonant prog bop of a synthwave masterpiece with enough indie lyrics to make it really interesting, “Happiness” was a good entry point into the world of Millennium Resorts, harking back to the old days of dream pop as the earliest. MGMT and M83 but with a pinch of grunge era Dig either Winchester Renaissance.
The next teaser, “The Big Show,” was released on November 25 and is just as long as “Happiness” (there are shorter radio edits for both), but it's much more of a thought piece, both musically and conceptually. As In the key of David It's a concept album, this track is where the band really delve into said concept. For those listeners who made it past “Happiness,” “The Big Show” rewards them with a darker, more gothic synth layout and almost operatic layout. This is what one would expect if one were to ask a Moog and a 808 confer with ChatGPT write a Broadway musical with Andrew Lloyd Webber as model. It's a good thing it's called “the Big Show.”
With genre twists and turns, everything from new wave to tron to shoe to zapa, the musical journey almost distracts from the message of “The Big Show,” but thankfully the eerie Ween-like vocals overwhelm and anchor the meandering music. Enough contrast to force the listener to focus, the lyrics seem directly contrary to those of “Happiness,” deconstructing the hopelessness and emotional oppression of daily life into an existential nightmare in the face of the modern world. While it hasn't been confirmed that it's about consumerism and the dangers of getting ahead culture, it certainly seems fitting that the duo decided to release this one just as the holiday season was beginning. Either way, it's a musical snapshot of a dystopian and it seems likely that Millennium Resorts will like it that way. After all, look at his name.
So, along with highly complex and expertly crafted music, this is also the depth of thought that new fans of this new band can expect to have. In the key of David, if we go by the concept track of “The Big Show” within this concept album. For those who like synthwave on the darkwave side in terms of mood, this album will be ideal.
In the key of David premieres January 25, 2024. Listen to “Happiness” and “The Big Show” here.
