With only a few episodes left until the grand finale, RuPaul's Drag Race Season 16 had to take a short bathroom break.
On last week's episode (March 22), the top six contestants were paired off as twins and asked to design gender-neutral bathrooms for an HGTV-style renovation sitcom. Designing a venue rather than their outfits, the girls needed to come up with cohesive themes and larger-than-life presentations to make the judges laugh.
Thanks to their 1920s-inspired bathroom — and a pair of well-crafted characters — Sapphira Cristál and Plane Jane achieved a double win, making them the two winningest queens of the season so far (Sapphira with four wins, while Plane follows with three). Meanwhile, Dawn's performance at the Museum of Modern Fart fell short of the judges' high expectations, while Morphine Love Dion couldn't find her spark on her infernal nightstand.
Finding themselves at the bottom, Morphine and Dawn lip-synced to Megan Thee Stallion's hit song 'Body'. Armed with her curvaceous figure and slick dance moves, Morphine owned every second of the booty-bouncing dance floor, earning her place in the hotly contested top five. That meant Dawn became Dusk and the Queen of Brooklyn was sent packing.
Below, Dawn chats with Advertising sign about her time on the show, becoming the season's unofficial narrator through her confessional clips, her explosive doo doo clown fight with Plane Jane, and why she thinks she never stood a chance against Morphine in this Lip Sync for Your Life.
Dawn, you made it to the top six! How do you feel about your run on the show?
Thank you, my greatest achievement! Looking back on the whole run, I have nothing but gratitude and happiness. I feel incredible, I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. Obviously, I didn't get any wins, I guess I didn't “make my mark” in that capacity. Like, there wasn't a single moment that was “about Dawn”, but even through it, I made it to the top six in an incredibly busy season! I have watched every episode and I am so happy and satisfied with what I have been able to offer to the audience.
I hear you, but I wholeheartedly disagree with not “making your mark” — because not only did you kill a lot of those challenges, but your confessionals were probably the funnest parts of every episode.
[Laughs.] I guess that's my win — do they give challenge wins for the best confessors?
You were the storyteller of the season without a doubt because you just weren't afraid to be unfiltered and casual in these clips. What was the energy you were trying to bring to these sessions?
Ok, the keyword is there tries – because let me tell you, I wasn't tries to do anything! I rolled into that confessional chair and I was just excited, happy to be there, ready to cut and shoot the s–t. At times, I was definitely a little too comfortable in that confessional chair. But, it worked for me, because what you see is deeply authentic to me as a person. This is how I talk to my friends and the people I love. I don't sit there timidly, afraid to say how I feel.
I mean you really go after us theater gays in that episode.
Sorry! [Laughs.] There's a particular moment of this particular confession that happened – when I was about to start speaking, there's a glint in my eye and then I'm suddenly like, “No, wait, I shouldn't say that.” It was so funny.
You also did one of my favorite things that the queens do on this show, where you would walk into a stage, ask the other girls a very pointed question, and then go backstage to watch the drama unfold—
This was crazy, because I didn't even realize I was doing this until I watched the season back! What I like to say is, “I'll never start the drama, but I'll make sure it never ends.”
But there was one exception to this trend, which was the most emblematic “doo doo clown mayhemmoment between you and Plane Jane. You actually called her dress boring and so did she Cracked. How was that legendary close reading session?
This might have been my favorite moment this season, just like I said something so… well-intentioned, honestly! I just said, “the dress is ugly,” and I thought she'd just say, “Okay, I hate you,” and move on. It popped so effortlessly! He stands upright as a vulture and circles me, and I'm sitting there smiling, like, “Yeah, girl, go ahead!”
What's so funny is that he kept “reading” me, but in the end he was just stating facts. He said I was dressed like a clown—that's right, I was. You say I'm wearing baby cloth — also right, and exactly the point of dressing up, thanks, girl. She didn't say anything that hurt my feelings because I was like, “You get the idea behind the outfit, amazing! Now please sit down!”
When this last episode started, you and Morphine were the only girls without a win — how does that affect your mind, especially in competition?
Interesting. One thing that I felt a lot at the time, probably like episode 11 to 12, was that… I don't mean this in a pessimistic way, but I'd kind of given up on winning a challenge. My main goal at that point was just to have as much fun as I could. In my experience, this would translate to the judges and the audience. I remember thinking I wasn't letting it go enough. In episode 11, I wanted to leave more, but then I got paired with Mhi'ya, so I said, “We'll try again in episode 12.” And then I got to the next week and “Body” happened — so what's a girl to do?
Oh, we'll discuss everyone's “Body” but before we do, I just want your take on this challenge. I think this HGTV bathroom makeover spoof might be one of the weirdest main challenges ever Drag Race has done for a while — do you like it when the show gets a little loose with its challenges?
Girl, I haven't been able to get into a public bathroom since this challenge, the wound. I mean, I had the Bride reigning, who wanted to paint stern on the walls! But there's something about this show where sometimes we're told, “Please, let's not do fart jokes, let's not do fart jokes,” and then they ask us to decorate a bathroom and make it funny—we're going to do fart jokes, girl!
But all of this is to say: As absurd as it was, and as frustrating as it was to come home to this challenge, I also think that one of my favorite aspects of Drag Race it is the absurdity of all! When we get into these kinds of challenges, it's really iconic.
Which brings us to the lip sync. Once you were at the bottom, in that tight dress, against Morphine lip-syncing to Megan Thee Stallion's “Body,” was there a part of you that thought, “Can I win this?”
No! [laughs] You're joking? What was going through my mind was, “Which wig to put in which suitcase?” Like, as much as I want to think and I want to say… actually, no, I'm not even going to say that! I'm Never Gonna Beat The Morphine On 'Body' By Megan Thee Stallion! Miami's BBL queen? It's a wrap for me, sister! She could have lip-synced her sixth to a broken leg, and me yet he would have gone home. I just have to be cool with it!
Before I let you go, I'd love to know — what music have you been listening to lately?
I've been streaming Eternal sunshine on repeat, without skipping a beat, over and over again. is crazy. My favorite songs are definitely “Supernatural” and “We Can't Be Friends”. But aside from that, I've also been listening to a lot of Beabadoobee and I've been really into this first new song from Rainbow Kitten Surprise in six years. This has been my playlist lately.
